SOCIALDRESS  2006 - 2016

The author Marija Mojce Pungercar uses the term “social dress” for clothing that has an integrative effect in terms of community. The Socialdress workshops spread knowledge about clothes making, at the same time reinforcing awareness about the consequences of globalization to the Slovenian textile industry, and about the gradual disappearance of craft skills. At Socialdress workshops we create functional items of clothing with a lot of soul that are easy to make as well. An important part of the workshops is an exchange of stories and experiences.

The Socialdress project was first introduced in 2006 at the Intermediate Spaces Festival in Ljubljana (the Kapelica Gallery) and in Graz (the ESC Gallery, Steiern Autumn).

In 2007, the project was part of the Thread exhibition in Slovenj Gradec (the Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts) and the 27th Biennial of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana.

In 2008, the Socialdress Long Life Bag, an eco-friendly shopping bag, commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia was designed from the Socialdress fashion fabric for the participants of the international conference »New Paradigms, New Models – Culture in the EU External Relations«.

In 2009 we organised the workshop of recycling ties for members of the diplomatic community in Slovenia, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia. In UGM Art Gallery Maribor (Umetnostna galerija Maribor), we realised The Workshop of Producing Microbes, in the context of the exhibition The Slovene Female painters and Sculptors 1918 - 1945.

In 2010 took the Socialdress workshop (recycling clothes) the part of the 11th festival Red Dawns in Ljubljana and the part of the Word for Word Without Words at the Ljubljana City Art Museum. It was also presented at the conference The Imperative of Participation (organized by Goethe Institute Zagreb), in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Zagreb.

In 2011 there were three international Socialdress workshops: exchanging / recycling clothes (ReArt, Pecs, Hungary), recycling ties (Fabrica di Pensule, Cluj, Romania) and recycling uniforms and national symbols (Pogon, Zagreb, Croatia).

In 2012 was Socialdress exhibited at the group exhibition Textil{e}tronics in the Galženica Gallery in Velika Gorica, Croatia. The Blossoms in Autumn workshop was a guest of the Festival of the Third Age in Cankarjev dom and of the Elderly Daycare Centre Šiška, both in Ljubljana. The Socialdress Service workshop in the Skuc Gallery in Ljubljana was a part of the International Festival of Contemporary Arts City of Women. In October was the Sociladress project introduced at the artists talk Alejandra Herrera & Marija Mojca Pungerčar, Crisis? What Crisis ?, in Cafe Alma, in Kuopio, Finland. With the Introduction into Power Cloth workshop we started the partnership with RogLab in Ljubljana. Socialdress project was also presented at the round table The Way of Fabrics and Clothes in the library of the House of the Worlds (in the Oton Zupancic City Library) in Ljubljana.

In 2013
was the workshop Socialdress Power Cloth organised again in RogLab because of big interest for participation. Three Socialdress Service workshops and the exhibition were part of the Trouble festival in Brussels, Belgium, at the end of April. In August we organize a week-long workshop in RogLab as the beginning of the new project Socialdress - Power to the People. The project was exhibited in the beginning of October in Alkatraz Gallery in Ljubljana at the solo exhibition. The exhibition was the day after the opening destroyed, because exhibited works were stolen from the alleged ideological and political reasons. After the incident was at the Alkatraz Gallery organized a public forum. The project Socialdress - Power to the People was after that exhibited in Museum of Contemporary Art in Ljubljana (MSUM) at the group exhibition 1:1 stopover.

In 2014, the project Socialdress - Power to the People in the MSUM concluded with the performance Completing the Collection. The project continues with ongoing making works by request. In January / February followed in RogLab the new thematic workshop Socialdress Wall Newspaper (About Work). The works were by the end of February exhibited at the group exhibition Attention, Work!, in the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana. The Socialdress project was also presented at the symposium Co-creative Process, the Art and the Individual, on the Cultural Bazaar in Cankarjev dom in Ljubljana.

In July 2015, the project Socialdress was presented with a lecture in Depot, the place for discussion and art in Vienna. In October, the international festival Urbanize! in cooperation with Soho in Ottakring hosted the new thematic workshop Socialdress Serve & Store Bags. The workshop products were exhibited at the group exhibition 9000 km Häppchen - wanderndes Wissen in Altes Kino Sandleiten in Vienna. Later in October the project Socialdress celebrated the 10-years with the the solo exhibition Socialdress - Small Retrospective Exhibition in the Alkatraz Gallery in Ljubljana, which was in 2016 transferred to Kibela Gallery in Maribor.
